UPDATE -- Plans to have a conservator of the peace did not work out. So Snowshoe has made an arrangement with several State Troopers who during their off-duty hours will be available to work for an hourly wage as additional security on the mountain. They will be employed during peak times and peak seasons as needed (for instance, during Christmas Week, New Year's, and possibly some major summer events like Chili Cookoff). Assessment money will be used to pay for the troopers' work but because of adjustments with the Snowshoe security budget, no additional funding will be necessary.

UPDATE -- December 6, 2009.
Snowshoe and the Pocahontas County Sheriff and others are working on getting the resort a conservator of the peace (or two?) who would have the powers of a sheriff's deputy and would be paid through the county sheriff's department. No matter what is worked out, it will NOT affect the assessment for homeowners. We will keep you posted as things develop.

The following letter went out to Association Presidents concerning the change in our security system here at Snowshoe. We will keep you posted as more news comes in.
Homeowners Association President::
I want to update you on an important change that has been made regarding the operations of Snowshoe’s Public Safety department.
As of October 1, law enforcement activities for Snowshoe Mountain will be provided by the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Department and West Virginia State Police. Public Safety will no longer carry weapons, handcuffs or make traffic stops. The role of Public Safety will be to observe report and investigate. Resort officials are working with the Sheriff's department, County Commission, and Prosecuting Attorney to ensure that we have adequate law enforcement resources to support the resort. The cooperation between these entities is positive and we are confident that we will work together to deliver law enforcement services to the community.
The decision to make this change was taken after a thorough review with the Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney and legal counsel. One thing remains constant: we are absolutely committed to providing a safe and secure resort experience to our homeowners, guests and employees.
I wanted to update you on this change and progress toward a law enforcement solution. We believe the best approach is to allow the resort management to work with the governmental entities to maximize service. As you are aware, Snowshoe and its homeowners contribute over 49% to the tax base of Pocahontas County. Should we need your assistance at some future point, we will without hesitation inform you of when, where and how you may help.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or Bill Rock.
Sincerely, J.D. Morgan
